A super computer and IBM whose name Sequoia has managed to shift the super computer K Computer Fujitsu-made as the world's fastest super computers.
As quoted from ArsTechnica, Super computer Sequoia has been established as the world's fastest super computer that has entered the list of Top 500 sites in the morning today (18/06/2012).
The fastest Super computer was built and assembled with IBM hardware at Lawrence Livermore National laboratory (LNLL) belonging to the United States Department of energy.
Previously, the record for the fastest computers owned by super computer Japan, K Computer made by Fujitsu with Sparc64 processor 705.000 cores that generates performance to VIIIfx 6 or 6 thousand trillion petaflops calculations per second with power consumption up to 12,66 megawatts.
While the super computer Sequoia has higher performance and lower power consumption more efficient i.e. 16,32 or about 16 thousand petaflops trillion calculations per second with the power consumption is only 7.09 megawatts.
Super computer Sequoia will be used to conduct simulation testing of nuclear weapons instead of nuclear weapons testing in the real world.
You must be curious with a super processor used by the fastest computer in the world? IBM Sequoia uses IBM Power processor core speeds QBC 4 1, 6 GHz processor with as much 98.304 total core his reach 1.6 million core!
"For machines with 1.6 million core that has been running for more than 23 hours for 6 weeks since super computer was built without any flaws, it's amazing," said Kim, the leadership Division LNLL Cupps.
To test the durability of super computer IBM Sequoia, run software to Linpack LNLL for 23 hours without fail 1 core with efficiency up to 81 per cent.
Sequoia is capable of achieving sebenranya kenerja to more than 20 petaflops, however this was not done for reasons of power efficiency.
Kim Cupps also adds that super computer operating system uses a Sequoia Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) in each computer node.
Of the 500 fastest super computer on the site Top 500, 372 of them using Intel Xeon processors and 2 of the top 10 fastest computers using the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) Nvidia combined with Intel Xeon processors.
The second position is occupied by competitor intel, AMD, via processor AMD Opteron with 63 followed by IBM super computer and IBM PowerPC processors through with 58 super computer.
213 of super computer in the Top 500 site is made by IBM, and then followed by the Hewlett-Packard (HP) who made 138 super computers.
