Teach Your Cat to Stop Scratching Your Stuff

A common misconception about cats is that they'll eventually shred everything in your home. Nothing's off-limits -- sofas, tables, woodworking, carpeting and even your draperies. But the reality behind felines and their "destructive" clawing isn't so simple. Kitty isn't intentionally trying to upset you or destroy your lovely home. She's simply performing an instinctive behavior. And, with correct guidance and proper equipment made especially to satisfy those cat-scratching urges, you can modify redirect that urge to scratch.

Cats need to scratch for various reasons. Felines must shed the sheaths of their claws so they can grow new ones. Also, they mark their territory by using scent glands on their paw pads -- done by scratching objects. Cats scratch for exercise, too, stretching their legs, feet and spine.

A variety of enticing scratching paraphernalia is available, such as vertical, horizontal and even angled posts, trees and pads. Condos (manufactured in colors to match any home décor) with several scratching surfaces, such as different textures of carpet, wooden posts and sisal rope, are especially appealing to cats. Some cats like to scratch both horizontally and vertically, so offering a scratching assortment is sure to please your puss.

The platforms on your cat trees and condos should be large enough and sturdy enough so they won't tip while kitty climbs and scratches. The different levels and perches should be staggered, creating a stair-step effect for those felines, such as elderly or arthritic cats, who aren't so agile anymore. scratching posts need to be tall enough for your cat to stand on her hind legs, anchor her claws in the post, and get a good stretch.

Placement is crucial, as well. Be sure to keep a post close to your cat's favorite sleeping spots, because she loves to stretch out and sharpen her claws as soon as she awakens from her catnap (however many times per day that may be). If there is a particular piece of furniture your cat finds irresistible, put a post in front of that spot to block her from scratching it and, once she discovers her own scratcher, slowly move to its permanent place (this may take several days). But the permanent place can't be the basement -- a scratching post is also a territory marker, and no self-respecting cat will want to mark undesirable territory.

Rubbing catnip on the posts will definitely help attract kitty. You should also encourage your cat to play at the scratching post. You may need to dangle toys around the post or manually put kitty's paws on the post and gently show her the scratching motion.

If your cat starts scratching your sofa, simply distract her and lead her over to her own enticing post. Once your cat learns that the scratching posts are her property to use as she sees fit, your furnishings, as well as your patience, will remain intact.

Constantly Feel Good About Yourself Using These 3 Steps

It is important that you feel good about yourself. More and more scientific evidence points towards a significant link between how you feel about yourself and your overall health and sense of well-being. Scientists have proven that feelings of inferiority have the capacity to pave the way to illness or disease. On the other hand, if you feel good about yourself, have a positive outlook, and maintain an active involvement in life, you’re more likely to be happy and healthy.
Our emotional state can be affected by a lot of things the environment we are in, the people we are with, the weather, the food we eat, how much sleep we’ve had, and so on. Feeling insecure, incapable and inadequate once in a while is part of being human, what matters is that you are able to make yourself feel better again.
If you feel as if you are currently in a state wherein you need some help on bolstering your feelings of self-worth, here are some ideas that you may find helpful:

Step 1: Reframe your identity
If you were asked to describe yourself, what would you say? What be the first adjectives that you would come out with? Experts say that a person’s self-worth can be assessed by the first five words that he would use to answer this question. If you answer with negative adjectives, then you would need to redefine how you think about yourself. Instead of focusing on the shortfalls in your life, bring to mind things that make you special.
For example, instead of branding yourself as a mere office worker, try looking at yourself as a great Mom or a great Dad. Pride yourself on your greatest achievements instead of highlighting flaws.

Step 2: Challenge negative self-talk
As we go about our daily lives, we constantly think about and interpret every situation that we encounter. It’s like we have this voice inside our head that talks us through everything. Psychologists call this inner voice “self-talk.” How this inner voice talks to us is based on our values, beliefs and our conscious and subconscious thoughts. If your self-talk is mostly negative, you will have a very hard time feeling good about yourself.
To correct negative self-talk, you need to learn to notice it as it happens, and consciously dispute and challenge these negative and irrational thoughts. Ask yourself questions like, “Are my thoughts factual?”, “Is this situation as bad as I am making out to be?” or “What can I do that will help me solve the problem?”. Make it a point to conquer self-defeating thoughts with positive and realistic thinking.

Step 3: Take time for yourself
In this world where everyone and everything seems to be in a rush, most of us don’t make ourselves a priority. Often we focus on catering to the needs of others and on being productive. Although it is good to take care of the people you love and fulfill your responsibilities at home and at work, you should not neglect your responsibility and obligation to yourself.
In the same way that you make others feel good when you take care of them, taking care of yourself will also bring about the same feelings. Make it a point that you allocate a certain amount of time each day for yourself to do things you love. Paying attention to yourself has been proven to improve self-esteem and feelings of self worth.
It is impossible for anyone to feel perfectly happy about who he is for their entire life. We are all bound to feel inferior or insecure every once in a while. Fortunately, our thoughts and feelings are not permanent and there are so many ways to love, accept and feel good about ourselves.

11 Essential Habits for Success

We all want to succeed. Whether it’s in losing weight, learning the guitar, speed reading, or starting our own business. For those of us who have tried and failed, success seems elusive. Why is it one person succeeds where another person fails? First and foremost, I believe it is in their mindset. But secondly, I believe that successful people have developed certain habits, either naturally or through research, that the rest of us haven’t stumbled upon yet.
Though I want each of you to succeed in everything you do, I can’t guarantee success. Only you can do that. It starts in your mind, and from there your thoughts take physical form through your actions. Believing in yourself is a necessity! Beyond that, I’ve made a list of some habits to help you set goals and achieve them.
1. Identify your core values
What is important to you? Finding your core values may seem a bit off-topic when it comes to success, but creating goals that are in line with your values is key to creating intrinsic motivation. Sit and reflect on what you value most. Pick a handful of things and actually write them down. Remind yourself of your values every day, and reflect on whether you are honoring those values through your work.
2. Pick a goal (Focus)
Choose one goal to start. Something large enough that will give you a sense of accomplishment, while aligning well with your core values. Focus is key here. The more focused you are on one goal, the higher chance you have of success. If you spread yourself too thin, you might never complete your projects because they will take far too long. Believe me, multitasking isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
3. Set a deadline for success
Set a date for success. Identify when your hope to achieve your goal. Keep it realistic, while not giving yourself too much time. By setting a time limit, you are making the process more real. You also now have something to visualize in the next point.
4. Build the right mindset
Believe fully in your ability to achieve your goal. Visualize yourself having completed your goal in the exact time-frame you have chosen, although finishing early is also acceptable. You don’t need to consider the failures that will happen along the way. Success is inevitable. Others may think you will fail, don’t let yourself be one of them! (If you have trouble visualizing success, perhaps a fear of success is limiting you)
“Whether you think that you can, or that you can’t, you are usually right.” - Henry Ford
5. Consequences for missing your deadline
Set up negative consequences for missing the deadline. Necessity is the mother of all invention. If you can manage to keep yourself intrinsically motivated, that’s great. If not, this will help kick you into gear and keep your eye on the prize.
6. Weekly and Daily Goals (Plan)
Break down goals by week and by day, setting up a plan to reach your overall objective. Keep the number of tasks per day as low as you can, and focus on completing only your planned tasks for each day. If you find yourself done, pick the next thing from your weekly list. Do the hardest things during your peak energy level, which usually means doing them first!
7. Prioritize
Prioritize the tasks you have in front of you. Don’t always do the most urgent thing first. Pick the task that’s the most important. Sometimes these overlap, which is nice. By always accomplishing what’s most important, you are making clear progress toward your goal.
Also keep in mind that completing the hardest task first is a sure-fire way of increasing your productivity. If you put it off until later in the day, your energy level is bound to drop, and finishing the hard task will seem daunting and maybe even impossible. But, if you start off with the hardest task, when your energy level is high, you will have the focus and energy required to finish it off.
8. Take risks
Push yourself. Go out of your comfort zone. This is the best way to learn, and the best way to make progress quickly. If you’re looking for new ideas, being risk averse will not help. This takes a lot of self-awareness. Try and be conscious of when you are holding yourself back out of fear. Push yourself to be courageous, and take that next step.
9. Perseverance
Failure is inevitable when you take risks, which is what you’ll be doing if you want to succeed. By its very definition, the desire to succeed at something means you are risking failure. Many people tend to give up far too early. Don’t fall into this trap! Remember your mindset earlier, and visualize your success. Know it will happen. A failure is merely you working out the details, and learning what works and what doesn’t. Use failure. Treat it as a good thing, and march on!
10. Reflect
Take time every day to sit quietly and reflect on your values, goals, and progress made so far. Where have you excelled, and where can you do better. Is everything you are doing still lining up with your core values? Always look for ways to improve.
11. Learn
Never stop learning. Know what everyone else is doing, and what everyone else has done, and how they did it. Search wide for knowledge that might help you, and any inspiration that may do the same. Never think you have nothing to learn from others.
***
I cannot overstate the value of building the correct mindset and perseverance. I believe these two habits are the fundamental building blocks to enjoying any great success in life.

How to Not Let Words Hurt You

“You’re fat.”
“You’re ugly.”
“Is that the best you can do?”
“You suck.”
The echoes of what someone else has said about you keeps repeating over and over in your head. You can’t seem to shut it out.
The worst part is, it has made you upset or extremely angered by that person who said those mean things about you. That’s all you feel and think about all day. Your day is ruined.
Has this ever happened to you?
We’re bound to meet people who hurt us
During our lifetime, we meet all sorts of people. But not all of them end up being our friends. We all have different values and principles, so when we meet someone who differs in terms of viewing life, there’s bound to be conflict. And some are all too ready to express their disagreement, however nasty they want it to be.
You may be caring too much about what others think.
This is the underlying issue which a lot of us suffer from. We constantly care about what others think and how they see us. A lot of us do not like to be judged and we worry about the image we’re portraying to others. It may sound like a legitimate thing to do, as we do live in a society where we’ve to play by the rules, otherwise we may be shunned upon.
However, how much is too much? Why care about what others think to the point that it ruins our day and even holds us back to the things we truly want to do?
That is why the words which come out from others’ mouths hurt us. We let them hurt us. And there’s no point in that when it comes to our emotional well-being.
How to not let others’ words hurt you
These are the steps I take to making sure I don’t get hurt by others and what they say. It may not be the perfect solution, but the way I see it, they are the basic tips which, when applied, can actually surprise you with the results you want.
Replace it with a positive thought
When someone insults you or say something which you completely disagree with, it keeps repeating in our heads over and over. The reason it keeps going through in our heads is that, more than not, we are taught to deal head on with it. We are told to rationalize it, reason with it and even analyze it…which ends up being an ironic cycle as you passively deal with the thought, which is harming you in the first place.
Simply realize that these are just mere thoughts going through your head. Replace the thought with a more positive one. It could be a good memory, an optimistic view of the future or some cool scenario you’d really like to live. Maybe you’d call that wishful thinking, but if they’re just mere thoughts, why use negative ones and let them ruin your day?
Don’t let the hurtful words of others take control of your mind. Your mind is your mind, so control your thoughts and cheer yourself up.
Retort their words
A lot of times people’s words hurt us because we did not do a thing about it. We didn’t retort and make a stand for ourselves.
You may think, “Oh I just didn’t want to cause trouble,” or “It just wasn’t worth it”. But you may not realize that you’re simply repressing yourself. And when you’re repressed, you feel a void. That’s where the hurt comes from.
To not let others hurt you, you ought to stand up for yourself and make a retort when you disagree with what they say. This allows for expression, which pretty much helps to clear up the negativity inside you. Trust me — it will make you feel a lot better when you express yourself. You will at least know that you did your best and everything you could against things you disagree with.
Avoidance
The last tip is to simply avoid people who’re there to hurt you.
The problem here is that people always have an excuse to why they hang out with people they don’t like. Some people hang out with people they dislike because of their job or they don’t want to come across as petty. The way I see it, you ought to take responsibility for your own life. You may have your own commitments, but it doesn’t mean you can’t make the effort to surround yourself with positive people, which is something people forget.
So forget about commitments or living up to expectations for a second. Change your surroundings instead and get positive people along. It will make a difference and people aren’t going to be saying hurtful things to you.
Getting hurt by others’ words is a very common issue all of us face in life. Unless you’re extremely positive in life and totally focused, it’s hard to not let others bother you. Hopefully these tips will make a big difference. Give them a try and let me know in the comments what you’ve done (or are doing) to not let words hurt you.

The 3 Secrets to Achieving Overnight Success

How’d you like to hear about the one way to achieve success faster? Perhaps even overnight.
In a world filled with on-demand, instant-view, right now results … it’s easy to become impatient and want success today. Of course, most of the suggestions for instant stardom are hype and fluff. But there is actually a simple formula for achieving rapid success.
Let’s talk about that 3-part formula now.

First, know where you’re going.
Before you can have any amount of success, you need to know why you are doing what you’re doing. Only once you have a clear vision of where you’re going and why you’re going there will you understand the best (and fastest) way to get there.
I can’t tell you the best way to get to your specific goal, but I can tell you that the fastest way to go nowhere is by not having somewhere in mind.
Furthermore, when you have a destination that you are moving towards, it becomes easier to embrace the process of getting there. With each step you can see how you’re getting closer and closer to the end goal.

Second, connect with people who can help you get there.
When we hear the term “overnight success” we often associate that with someone who has very quickly become an authority or a celebrity in a particular industry or sector.
But here’s a nifty little secret about success: it’s much easier to connect with authorities and celebrities than it is to become one.
And when you connect with them, you automatically set yourself up for rapid success because you now have direct access to someone who can help you get to the top. They know the roadmap because they already walked it. Now all you have to do is ask questions about their success and listen carefully.

Third, it’s not about who you know, it’s about who knows you.
It’s easy to think that if you just knew the “right” person or if you just get a recommendation from a key influencer, then the doors would burst open and success would come pouring through.
And while it is critical to connect with influencers and decision makers (see point 2), the reason why it’s important is because they can show you where to go and what to do. In other words, they don’t do it for you, they simply show you how to do it.
Given that, you may be wondering, if success is not about who I know, then what’s the key?
The key is who knows you.
Connection is what gives meaning to our work. If you want to be successful and if you want your work to matter, then connection is the key.
Connections are the foundation of any meaningful work. It doesn’t matter how brilliant you are, how groundbreaking your work is, or how useful your discoveries are … if you don’t connect with someone else, then nobody knows about it. And if nobody knows about what you do, then you can’t make a difference or be successful or change the world.
This means that, if you’re truly serious about becoming an overnight success (or about achieving any type of success), then you need to commit to learning how to spread your message and your work. In an age where anyone can create content with publishing, writing, videos, podcasts, blogs, social media, and more, it has become critical to develop the skill of capturing attention.

What you should do now…
If you’re ready to be successful, then the time is now. There is no need to wait.
Start by getting very clear about why you do what you do. Know the direction and why you’re going that way.
Once you know where you want to go, start seeking out people who are already there. The influencers, decision makers, and connectors. Get to know them and they will kindly show you the way to go.
Once you know the path, start walking it. And as you do so, realize that your work will only have meaning if others know about it. Become an evangelist for your own goals. No matter what work you do, learn how to share it with others and capture their attention.
This simple path is the fastest way to overnight success.

Why Are You Getting Things Done?

Why are you collecting potential actions day-in and day-out in your collection tool of choice? Why are you processing the things you have collected and identifying potential outcomes of the stuff that has just come into your life? Why are you reviewing these things as much as you need to keep them active in your life? Why are you getting things done?
Sounds like a funny question, especially for a topic on Lifehack, whose sole purpose is to show you how to get things done faster and better. But, the question remains.
What is the point of these systems and getting all this stuff done?

The End Game
GTD prides itself with using a bottom up approach to productivity rather than the “traditional” top down approach like Covey and other life-coach type of gurus have tried to teach us. The idea is that by using this bottom-up approach, that is, capturing all of the potentially meaningful stuff in your life, identifying what it is, and either doing it or not, you will be using the best way to clear the decks and eventually find your life purpose. Your end game.

Being productive isn’t the end game. Being productive is the way to reach the end game. David Allen talks about the various Areas of Focus in our lives; the things that drive us as a human being. These can be:
  • Family
  • Spirituality
  • Career
  • Mental health
  • Vitality
  • Hobbies

These areas are the “why” behind getting things done and the reason that you need to be productive. We shouldn’t be getting things done for getting things done sake.

The paradox

So, how do you find your why? How do you get up close and personal with your end game. By getting things done.
OK, now we are drifting down to “na-na-nu-nu” land. You may be thinking, “you just told me that we need some sort of purpose to get things done. Thanks for nothing.”

The only way to find your purpose in life (your end game) is to clear your deck. There is no way (at least not one I have found) that you can experience the awakening of your goals and dreams when you are stressing about over 500 unprocessed emails in 3 different accounts (sounds familiar), have overdue tax bills, and have family members that need your attention because of your lack of attention. We must be able to give ourselves some breathing room.
We do this by collecting and processing these not done stuffs and put them into a trusted system. Once there, we can either commit or “uncommmit” to these tasks and outcomes. That alone is a totally freeing process: taking all of the junk in our lives, answering the question “what is this junk?”, and then purging or doing it now or a little later.
With this process under our belts, we slowly clear our mind and our workload allowing us to finally find our “why”.

Why you can’t find “why” right now
If you have an insane life of too much to do, and not enough time to do it in, then you will have a very hard time finding your end game and what’s important to you. You have to unbury yourself from crap work and tasks to get some breathing room to find your purpose.
The process is the thing

So, why are you getting things done?
Maybe you have identified that you have a family that needs taken care of. That family needs money to buy stuff. The job that you have (maybe even one you don’t necessarily like) is the way that you make money so they can buy that stuff. So, when you are doing the mundane “readying the TPS reports”, you can link this small task or project on your list to the “why” of being an awesome family man/woman.

Your end game is easier to reach when you get the mundane in a system and the mundane is easier to do when you link it to your end game. You only got here because of the process of collecting and processing into a trusted system.
Elevating the process of GTD

It’s time to get away from too many process and tools and tweaks. The process of GTD was made to be done with paper or digital tools. It’s tool agnostic for good reason.
There isn’t too much wrong with tweaking and fiddling with your tools as long as that tweaking and fiddling is to help you accomplish your end game with less resistance, not for the sake of fiddling.

So, when agreeing to a project or taking time out of your day to do one of those little tasks on your lists, remember and be conscious of why you are getting things done. This is the only way to make sure that you are getting the right things done and that the you have the right things to do to reach your end game.

Choosing Cat Names

Your cat's name says as much about you as it does your pet. A more human name might mean your cat is just like a child to you, while other names might better illustrate a beloved quality of your pet's, be it physical (think "Patches" or "Blackie") or part of his personality ("Dash" or "Sugar"). An offbeat name effectively displays your cleverness to your friends, while a popular, well-worn cat name might indicate a desire to cling to the comfortable, classic, tried and true.

But whether you're thinking quirky or popular, here are some things to keep in mind when naming your cat:

1.Choose a name kitty can recognize and respond to easily. One or two syllables is ideal. It's hard enough to get a cat's attention without a name like "Maximillian IV."

2.Pick a name your pet can grow into. "Baby" the kitten won't be a baby forever.

3.A classic name will be easier to call your cat in front of friends and family as opposed to something borderline embarrassing.

4.If you must name your cat something long, keep the shorter "call name" in mind, as that will most likely become your cat's working name.

If you're curious about what's popular in the cat name world, here are the top cat names on Catster.com:

Popular Female Cat Names: Chloe, Lucy, Bella, Kitty, Princess, Molly, Sophie, Angel, Lily and Baby

Popular Male Cat Names: Tigger, Max, Tiger, Smokey, Oliver, Buddy, Jack, Charlie, Simba and Shadow

It’s Time to Change Your Life

Too often we come home after a long day at work and open the takeout food, then plop down on the couch and watch TV until it’s time for bed.
The next day, we do the same thing again.
While I have been known to indulge in this from time to time, there’s an issue with this lifestyle. You basically spend each day, trying to get through it. You’re just living for the weekend.
The weekend is never long enough, of course, and then it’s another week of the same.
The problem with this is that months — or years — can go by. That’s time you won’t get back.
It wouldn’t be so bad if you knew how long you had on this spinning rock called Earth. The truth is, we aren’t really sure. So I propose to you to make the most of it.
Spend some time learning something new, or creating something…or taking up a new hobby. There’s a thousand different things that you can do. You might even return to an existing hobby that you haven’t indulged in for a while.
You dont have to be a productivity guru or sell your television. Just get up off the couch and do something.
Write a blog post. Start a novel. Pick up a paintbrush and make art. It only costs you some time…and you were wasting it anyway.
The key to this is: don’t worry about whether or not it’s good enough. You don’t have to show it to anyone. The first draft of anything is never all that good anyway. You can always revise it later or learn from the mistakes that you made.
Just do it for the sake of the craft. You just might surprise yourself. You might even start learning a new skill, one that may get you out of your current job and into a new one.
The clock is ticking…
For some people, they feel that because they have a ton of ideas, they are doing something productive. Sadly, there are a million people with a million ideas. The difference between those million people and you is execution.
It’s not enough to have the idea, you have to do the work. If you want change, you have to put in the effort.
The other end of the spectrum is taking this advice too far. Remember that this is not your job. It’s your time to relax, to do something fun. Taken too far, you will stress yourself out even more.
Think about “The Soccer Mom Syndrome”. You spend so much time doing other activities that you don’t have any down time.
I’m suggesting a balance between your job and relaxation. Just…turn off the TV once in a while and go create something. You’ll be a lot happier.
What do you think? Let me know in the comments.

For Craftsmen, Fragile Lifeline From Craigslist

Published: May 7, 2012

With few places to turn, construction workers have colonized Craigslist as the cyberspace equivalent of the street corner or the Home Depot parking lot.
doors. The pay is skimpy, they say, far beneath than during the bang years. Mostly, though, there is artlessly not abundant plan for the ample bulk of overqualified odd jobbers aggravating to cobble calm a subsistence.
“You can chase the beating of the abridgement just by watching what’s traveling on with Craigslist,” said Jerry Patterson, a carpenter in Phoenix who already had abounding plan framing new homes and adjustment earlier ones. “It’s a massive bulk of humans traveling for just a few bulk of calls.”
Listings beyond the country, typos and all, abduction the atrocious accomplishment to acquisition even a tiny atom of work.
“Trades man in South Florida for over 44 years ... For the time getting not any job is to small,” reads one archetypal ad. In Las Vegas, one of the areas hardest hit by the apartment collapse, a handyman writes: “30 Years of absolute harder becoming architecture experience. / Skilled in about every individual trade. Las vegas built-in & Individual dad in charge of work.”
Unemployed humans beyond abounding occupations are gluttonous plan on Craigslist, of course. But while added industries are starting to advance and restore added academic jobs, architecture charcoal on its knees.
According to the Labor Department, the architecture industry bargain 2.27 actor jobs from its prerecession aiguille to the canal of architecture application in January 2011. Just 95,000 jobs accept returned, or beneath than 5 percent of those lost. With civic unemployment at 8.2 percent in March, the amount a part of workers in architecture and excavation, including assignment operators and humans who abolish decay from architecture sites, is added than alert that, at 17 percent.
Manufacturers, by contrast, accept adequate 470,000 of the 2.29 actor jobs they absent from the alpha of the recession to their low point. And retailers, who cut about 1.2 actor jobs, accept brought aback 342,000 jobs, added than a division of those afford during the commensurable period.
When plan was simple to acquisition in 2005 and 2006, Mr. Patterson, 43, addled out on his own. He would abode an ad in the Sunday bi-weekly and get 30 calls, acquiescent at atomic three or four jobs. Now, he said, he puts an ad on Craigslist two or three times a day and is advantageous to get two calls a week.

On his last job, he said, he and an assistant installed 12 windows on a house. After paying for materials, he said they cleared about $100 a day for the eight-day project.
“Everything has been so slow that you know, when you make some money, it’s just gone immediately trying to catch up on everything,” said Mr. Patterson, who added that he can cover his bills only because he shares a rental home with his girlfriend, who works in a hospice.
Some construction workers have left the industry. But “it’s been very hard for people to give up and move to other sectors because it’s not like there’s been a lot of expansion in other parts of the economy,” said Nik Theodore, an associate professor in the department of urban planning and policy at the University of Illinois at Chicago. “Most of what I’m hearing is people eking it out on the edge of the construction industry.”
In Las Vegas, Paul Amyot, a abutment artisan who already installed carpets in casinos, has solicited jobs on Craigslist for two years. He is about to bankrupt his a lot of contempo amplitude of unemployment allowances afterwards commutual a three-week abutment job endure December, his aboriginal in added than a year.
To save money, Mr. Amyot, 41, has confused in with his sister. Not alone are opportunities fewer, he said, barter are paying less.
